How Often Should You Go for Teeth Cleanings?

At Ti Dental, our team is often asked how often you really need to schedule a professional cleaning. We understand how busy everyone’s schedules can be, which is why we want you to know the right frequency for your visits. Helping you maintain a healthy smile for years to come is our top priority.

While every smile is unique, a good rhythm for most people is to visit the dentist for a cleaning every 6 months. Your dental team can recommend a personalized schedule just for you and your family.

Why Regular Cleanings & Checkups Matter

Your toothbrush and floss are your daily tools for a clean, happy mouth, but professional cleanings offer a level of care that you can’t achieve at home. These regular appointments are about more than just a bright smile: They are a simple way to support your long-term oral health.

Keep Plaque & Tartar Away

Even if you brush and floss perfectly, a sticky film called plaque can still build up in hard-to-reach places. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which you can’t remove yourself. A professional cleaning is the only way to safely clear away tartar, which helps to prevent cavities and gum disease.

Support Your Gum Health

Healthy gums are the foundation for strong teeth. During your checkup, our dental team looks for any early signs of gum irritation or inflammation. Catching these issues early helps you keep your gums healthy and firm.

Spot Small Issues Early

A regular visit also includes a thorough exam of your mouth. This helps a dentist find small concerns, like a tiny cavity, before they become bigger, more complicated problems. It’s a proactive step that helps you feel secure about your oral health.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

If it’s been a while since your last visit, you might feel a little unsure of what happens during a cleaning. The entire process is designed to be comfortable, leaving you with a fresh, clean feeling. Your dental visit may follow these steps:

  • The exam: First, the hygienist or dentist takes a gentle look at your teeth and gums to check their current condition.
  • The cleaning: Using special tools, the hygienist will carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surface of your teeth and along your gumline.
  • The polish: A professional fine paste is then used to gently remove the bacterial film called biofilm, which serves as the home for bacteria on your teeth. A bonus is that any light stains are removed to give your teeth a nice shine.
  • The fluoride: To finish your appointment, your hygienist will apply a fluoride varnish or rinse to your teeth to provide added protection.

Standard Cleanings vs. A Deep Cleaning

You may have heard people talk about different kinds of dental cleanings. Your dentist in SW Calgary can explain which type of cleaning is suitable for your specific needs.

A standard cleaning is a preventive measure that helps to maintain good oral health. A deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a specific treatment used to address signs of gum disease. It involves cleaning below the gumline more thoroughly to help your gums heal and reduce infection or inflammation.

Signs You Might Need a Visit Sooner

Sometimes, your body sends signals that it’s time for a checkup, even if it hasn’t been 6 months. It’s a good idea to schedule an appointment if you notice any of these signs:

How to Care for Your Smile Between Visits

Though visits to our dental office are important, what you do every day has a significant impact on your oral health. Your at-home habits and professional cleanings are meant to work together to protect your smile.

The 3-2-1 Rule for Healthy Teeth

A simple way to keep your routine on track is to follow the 3-2-1 rule. This means eating 3 balanced meals a day, brushing your teeth 2 times a day, and flossing once a day. This sets a good framework for at-home care.

Proper Brushing & Flossing Techniques

Using proper brushing and flossing techniques helps you gently clean every surface of your teeth. When you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a dab of fluoride toothpaste. Flossing once a day is just as important, as it helps clear away plaque and food particles from between your teeth where your brush can’t reach.

Schedule Your Cleaning Today

Regular cleanings are a simple, effective way to care for your smile. At Ti Dental, our team is happy to help you find a schedule that keeps your teeth and gums healthy. Book your next appointment today, and take the first step toward great long-term oral health.
