What to Do If You Have Knocked Out a Tooth

Knocking out an adult tooth is certainly unnerving. However, if you stay calm and take the right steps, your dentist may be able to save the tooth.

The first step is to find the tooth. Pick it up by the chewing-surface end, not the root end. Rinse off the tooth gently, but do not scrub it, as you don’t want to damage any of the tissue attached to it. If you can, try to reinsert the tooth into its socket. It might help to bite down on some moistened gauze or paper towel. Once the tooth is back in its socket, get immediate dental help.

If you cannot get the tooth back into its socket, do not panic. Touch the tooth as little as possible, place it in a container of milk or your own saliva, and head to the dentist.
